BUILDING TECHNOLOGY 1 (ARC 3514)
In this module students will be exposed to a more extensive study of building construction by investigating the latest and more advanced technology and practice of the industry; from site analysis to all the advanced construction systems, energy efficiency, waste management, embodied energy as well as the latest construction methods. In addition it also intends to expose students to the study of construction through case studies of existing buildings and applying the construction methods and systems of the building into their own design while addressing the issues pertaining to ecological impact. There are two projects in this subject.
PROJECT 1: INDUSTRIALISED BUILDING SYSTEM
This assignment is related to the topics of Industrialised Building System (IBS) as well as the materials’ embodied energy. Before embarking on this project students will be exposed with different types and methods of the IBS system and the calculation of embodied energy of different building materials in the classroom. Firstly, t his project assigned us to form a group with five to six members. Later, the group has to design a 3-storey apartment block using mainly IBS components. Then, the group has to construct a physical model of the building to imitate the actual IBS construction process and to record all the process in a video.
Learning Outcome:
-
Identify and collect relevant research data.
-
Explain a set of architectural and structural documentation.
-
Relate basic structural elements and structural principles in construction.
-
Analyse and document construction methods and materials.
-
Critique issues pertaining to energy efficiency, embodied energy as well as ecological impact.
PROJECT 2: CONSTRUCTION SOLUTIONS
This assignment is aligned with the Studio Design Project (semester 4 and 5) and aims to facilitate students in the technical studies and development of their design. It deals with the analysis and establishment of the structural and the envelope systems of the student’s design to ensure that the design has logical and workable construction systems. It also encourages students to think about construction as integral part of the design and not just an afterthought. Most of the times amateur designers tend to design their spaces without thinking about the construction aspects and later on have to change and redesign their schemes due to the designs were unbuildable. This assignment was design with the intention to tackle this issue and to increase the technical competency of students.
Learning Outcome:
-
Analyse and document construction methods and materials
-
Evaluate existing construction system and detailing of the selected project.
-
Critique issues pertaining to construction principles, materials, techniques, codes of practice, process of assembly, and detailing.
-
Generate alternative construction solutions by means of sketches and drawings.
