ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO V (ARC 60306)
Architecture Design Studio 5 focuses on the theme of place-making for the urban street. It aims to explore and provide appropriate architectural solutions in designing a community library for the city’s inhabitants. Students will begin by conducting preliminary studies in that introduces them to the studies and context of urbanity through the analysis and documentation of the current urban condition of a selected inner-city site. This will be done in concurrence with the research of urban infill and community library precedents, and their architectural responses. By the end of the module, students will have developed an appropriate scheme for an urban contemporary community library within a dense inner-city street environment that takes into consideration an understanding of applicable current legislations, building technologies and cultural imperatives of the site and its surrounding.

Task Requirements:
The new community library will be a vibrant and interesting place for the whole community, welcoming people of all ages and all backgrounds. The role of the library as a focus for community interaction. It will be a focus for a variety of cultural, learning and recreational opportunities.
• an inspiring and inviting library building
• a focal point for the community, generating a feeling of ownership on the part of its users
The new Library building will meet community needs in a number of ways:
• more reader places and more computers to meet growing demand
• a better displayed and housed collection
• improved accessibility
• better facilities for target groups (e.g. young adults)
• a showcase for historical resources of the local government area,
• quiet study areas
• a small meeting room which can be used for a variety of purposes
• a multifunction space for a range of activities including travelling exhibitions, children’s storytelling and activities, meetings of specialist groups.
