THEORIES OF ARCHITECTURE & URBANISM (ARC 2224)

The subject offers a thematic inquiry into architectural and urban theory in the broader context of philosophical schools of thought and cultural and social conditions, which include modernism, postmodernism, phenomenology, semiotics, post-structuralism, deconstruction and critical regionalism.  There are one project and four synopsis were assigned in this subject.

PROJECT : THE IMAGE OF THE CITY

This project assigned students to present an in-depth and analytical research study on the designated topic. Students are to explore the image of a city based on Kevin Lynch’s most famous work, The Image of the City (1960). The project is divided into two parts; the first is to identify Lynch’s 5 elements; path, edges, districts, nodes and landmarks within a selected city and the second part is to produce an essay with a cognitive mapping of the city.  I was assiged to conduct the research of Brickfield.  Our tutor also brought us to site visit before we are starting to do our research.

Through this project, I have learned to analyse architecture and urban forms in relation to relevant architectural theories and the relationship between architecture and its social, cultural and intellectual context.  At the same time, I also have improved my writing skills.  I am able to produce, orally and in writing, a critical interpretation of architecture and urbanism in relation to relevant theories within the contemporary discourse of architecture.

PROJECT PART A: IDENTIFYING FIVE ELEMENTS

PROJECT PART B: AN ILLUSTRATED ESSAY WITH COGNITIVE MAPPING OF BRICKFIELD

SYNOPSIS: REACTION PAPER

Reading is one of the main tasks in this subject.  We are required to read different types of book which are assigned by lecturer.  Later, we need to highlight and analyse the point which is mentioned in the book. After that, we only start to write our own perspectives and opinions regarding to the book. Indeed, all the writing are related to architecture.  Hence, by writing these reaction papers, I think I have learned to describe the theoretical issues related to design through study of architecture and urbanism and relate architectural theories to contemporary architecture and urban forms.  Followings are the photo of four reaction papers wrote by me.
