   JOURNALS AND REFLECTION

 

 

30 March 2016, Wednesday

Today is the first lecture of community service initiative.  Our lecturers, Miss Salvia and Miss Suja briefed us that we are required to complete the community service for a certain NGO within 10 weeks. After that, we are required us to form group with 30 members and decided which NGO that we are willing to join. In the end, my group decided to join Loss Animal Soul Shelter.  

 

Loss Animal Soul Shelter is an organisation which offers a shelter for stray dogs until they are adopted by people.  Two different tasks which are requested by this organization.  The two tasks included dog adoption and fund raising.  Later, my group chose to do the fund raising for this organization.  The profit from fund raising is used to create quarantine room for stray dogs.

 

After having few discussions, my group decided to choose badges and bags as the products of our fund raising and estimate that 1000 badges and 400 bags should be sold for this fund raising. Later, leader divided us into three subgroups; badges group, bags group and event group. I involved myself in bags group.  All the badges and bags are designed by our group members. Furthermore, we also designed few posters and website in order to promote this fund raising event. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

9 April 2016, Saturday

Today is the first time we visited to  Loss Animal Soul Shelter. This visitation is to attend the workshop which is held by them. The purpose of this workshop is to introduce the basic knowledge which is related with dogs and showed us the right way in taking care of dog. In this workshop, we have met the person in charge, Sam, and he has briefed us on what we should do during this workshop.   After that,we are allowed to walk into the dog's shelter in order to play and communicate with dogs.  At the same time, we are also given an opporturnity to feed them. Following that, we also completed some volunteer works through this workshop. We carried the bricks which are needed for floor pavements in dog's shelter.

 

23 April 2016, Saturday

This is the second time that we went to Kuala Selangor in order to particapte another workshop which is held by Loss Animal Soul Shelter.  This workshop not only able to enhance our knowledge in taking care of dogs but also allow us to experience it by working with the dog.  We are allowed to help the stray dogs to bath by using the soap which is provided by this centre.  After that, we needed to colour a yellow dot on the forehead of dogs.  This enables the staff to know that the dog is already bathed.  Other than that, Mr Sam also requested us to sell their shirts to the crowd in order to get more profit for the shelter.

After the badges and bags are made, we only started to sell our products.  This is the first time that we started to sell our products to community in Desa Park, Damansara.  Firstly, leader divided us into three groups to sell our products. However, our behaviour is stopped by the security guard of Desa Park.  He told us that we are not supposed to do any activity in here without getting permission.  Consequently, we ended our activity on that day.  Yet, we also successfully sold some of our products to the crowd at there.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

21 May 2016, Saturday

Today, there is a dog adoption event which is held by our coursemates in One Utama Dog Park.  My group decided to join their event.  Hence, we are able to sell our products to the community in One Utama Dog Park.  We not only sell our products by placing the products at the booth of events but also walking around the park to promote this fund raising activity and dog adoption activity.  At the same time, we also helped our coursemates to sell the products from their group.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

28 May 2016, Saturday

This time is the last event which is particiapated by me and some of my groupmates.  This is due to my group divided few groups to sell the products in different places and time.  We decided to rent one of the stall of Bazzar event to sell our products.  This event is managed by Taylor's mass communication students in Jaya One.  In this event, we tried our best to promote this fund raising to the crowds at there.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

My Reflection

Through this project, the crucial things that I have learned is to understand  the community around us.  Each of us should have the sense of social responsibility and caring to the community. Besides, this project also introduced me that we should pay attention to the stray dogs and give more caring to them.  Most of the stray dogs are abandoned by their host.  Hence, we should promote and encourage other people to adopt a dog instead of buying a new dog to be your own pet.

 

By doing this project, I have improved my managment skills as we knew that conducting a fund raising event is not an easy task.  To conduct a fund raising, we needed to have a planning and timeline.  For example, we have to think which products we should sell in order to get more profit and always set a timeline to ensure you can complete all the works on time.  Consecutive tasks may be affected due to the delay of completing the previous works.

 

Furthermore, I also think that my communication skills and problem solving skills are strongly enhanced.  Communication is important in a team.  A team is not able to work well without a good communication between group members. For instance, we should discuss with other group members when we are encountering some problems.  So, it can cause our work to run smoothly and efficiently. Other than that, we are also required to communicate with strangers.  To conduct a success fund raising event, promoting always plays as a crucial role.  This is because we have to promote our things to others through a simple and clear explaination.  At the same time, this also enables us to be more confident while talking with strangers.

 

Lastly, I appreciated that I have joined a great team.  Each of the members did a lot of effort for this project.  Without them, I think this project is not able to be completed successfully and efficiently.
