The subject explores the history of South, Southeast and East Asian architecture as a whole within a systematic treatment of architectural design and construction, building science and technology, garden design and city planning through three key themes: sustainability, tradition and modernity and globalisation.
PROJECT : CONTEXTUAL ARCHITECTURE STUDY AND CASE STUDY PAPER

This project requires us to find an Asia building with contextual architecture as our case study. Later, we need to do a further analysis and produce a research paper with 2000 words, oral presentation, powerpoint presentation and boards.
I have selected Cheng Qi Tulou (Fujian Tulou) as my case study. Cheng Qi Tulou nicknamed “the king of Tulou, belongs to Gaobei Tulou cluster. It is located at Gaobei Village of Yongding county. A tulou is usually massive, enclosed and fortified earth building. It is a round structure with four concentric rings surrounded the ancestral hall in the center.
Cheng Qi Tulou contains 400 rooms which is used to house 80 families. Other than that, there are also other smaller interior can be found in tulou such as storehouses and well. Hence, tulou also called as a dwelling. It is designed to defend and protect themselves against enemies. Other than that, the design of Cheng Qi Tulou is strongly emphasized the sustainable design in architecture. It is designed according to site contextual which is surrounded it.
Through this research, I have found out that passive design strategies are applied in Cheng Qi Tulou. The passive design stratgies which can be found in Tulou included rammed earth structure, round structure, roof structure, using regional materials as building material and design according to the topography and vegetation. Due to these features, it creates a thermal comfort for Cheng Qi Tulou. Hence, Tulou is Sustainable and durable.

When doing this project, I have learnt to find the information of research from different sources. After that, I also anaylsed it according to the informations that I found. At the same time, I am able to identify significant elements of Contextual Architecture through investigation on the selected building. This research also have improved my knowledge about how passive design strategies can achieve thermal comfort in my design. I belive that these knowledges can help me in my future as well.
Other than that, this project also teaches me to be more discipline. This is because I need to arrange my time probably in order to find infomations, anaylsing and produce boards, research paper and presentation slides. Hence, I can submit all my work on time. I also have enhanced my problem-solving and communication skill via this project. Due to this project is an individual project, so that I will ask tutor or friends when I am facing some problems regarding to my work.
