BUILDING SERVICE (BLD 60903)
This subject introduced the services that are commonly provided in a building; primarily cold and hot water supply, sewerage disposal and treatment, drainage and storm water management, electrical supply, fire protection systems, mechanical ventilation and air-conditioning systems and mechanical transportation systems. At the same time, it also provides the knowledge which related to the basic requirements, planning, coordination and installation of these services besides the regulations especially the ones related to Uniform Building By-Law (UBBL).
PROJECT 1: APPLICATION OF BUILDING SERVICES
This project assigned student to propose and design the systems which is required in Retreat House. Retreat house is one of the studio design project in semester two. Few systems are needed to apply in Rretreat House; electrical supply system, cold water and hot water supply system, sewerage and sanitary system and drainage system.
Through this project, I am able to identify relevant information related to water supply, liquid waste disposal, mechanical air-conditioning, fire safety and vertical transportation system. At the same time, I also have improved my knowledge in the planning and installation of building services within the total design and construction process.
Follwings are the final boards of these four systems.
PROJECT 2: CASE STUDY AND DOCUMENTATION OF BUILDING SERVICES SYSTEM
This project requires students to form a group with six person. After that, students are required to choose one building of 5-storey high in order to do analysis which related to the service systems. Four service systems are included in this analysis; mechanical ventilation, air-conditioning system, active and passive fire protection system and mechanical transportation system.
We have chosen Cheras Leisure Mall as our building to do a further analysis. We also went to there to visit and got some informations which related with the four systems from the staff. Later, we started to do the documentation. From this site visit, we able to see the appliances and equipments of four systems such as cooling tower, kitchen exhaust, water tank, AHU, lift and others.
Through this assignment, we have learnt to Identify and understand relevant information related to mechanical ventilation, air-conditioning, and mechanical transportation system as well as fire protection systems. Other than that, we also able to understand how service systems work for the building and space implications and regulations related to different building services.
