PROJECT 1: MEMORIALS THEMED 'JOURNEY OF THE 5 SENSES'

This project requires student to form a group with four or five person and designs two memorials with the consideration of its spatial poetics and typologies.  The spatial poetics and typologies can be formed through the considerations of human scale, natural light, materiality and textures.  Other than that, we are also required to think the site which suits for the memorials.

We have to choose two buildings as our precedent for analysing before we started to think and design the two memorials. Both precedents contain different requirements ; it can be local, national or international examples. Moreover, one precedent must be pre-modern movement whereas another precedent must be contemporary. Also, one precedent must be linear and the other must be concentric.  After we have analysed the precedents, we can apply the design strategies from the precedent  into our memorials. Hoki Musuem and Villa Rotunda are selected by us as our precedents.  Followings are the board of precedent studies.

There are two themes assigned to two memorials; Lee Kuan Yew Memorials and Lahad Datu Invasion Memorial.  We have designed the Lee Kuan Yew Memorials in concentric whereas Lahad Datu Invasion Memorial in linear.

LAHAD DATU INVASION MEMORIAL

Lahad Datu Invasion Memorial is the second memorial which is designed by us. We decided to design it nearby the waterfall. A metaphor is strongly created through this site contextual. The idea of selecting waterfall as the site due to the sound from waterfall is able to generate feelings to visitor. As we know that, this incident is happened due to some terrorists invaded into Lahad Datu and causing few people to hurt and die.  Through this incident, we wanted to bring out the message about the importance of cherish. At the same time, we also wanted to tell the public about the horrible of wars. This message is needed to be transferred through a long journey.  Hence, we designed this memorial in a linear form.

Lahad Datu Invasion Memorial sits on the hill. At the same time, there is a waterfall behind the memorial. After walking through this building, you are able to feel the senses of destruction, education and regeneration. This design is used to emphasise the message about cherish

LEE KUAN YEW MEMORIAL

This project is to explore issues of spatial typologies and poetics. We are required to design a memorials and the form of semi-open architecture by using two contrasting spatial types of our choice; concentric and linear form.  Lee Kuan Yew Memorial is one of the choices that we are required to design. My group designed Mr. Lee Kuan Yew Memorial in a concentric form. The idea of designing the memorial in a concentric form is come from the personality of Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. As we know that, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew is the first prime minister of Singapore who always plays as an important role in the world. Hence, we designed in concentric form in order to represent that he is a great person and enhance the remembrance and respect to him.  In order to emphasise its personality, this memorial is placed between the hill and ground.

Lee Kuan Yew Memorial sits on the hill. It is able to connect the pathway between hill and ground.  Hence, there are two entrances in this memorial. One of the entrance is walking up to the top of hill from the ground whereas another entrance is walking down from the top of hill to the ground level.
